Foodies – Time Your Trip

The Cheesecake Factory – Crispy Crab Wontons – Crabmeat Blended with Cream Cheese, Green Onion, Water Chestnuts and Sweet Chili Sauce Fried Crisp in Wonton Wrappers.

If you are a foodie – I do recommend trying to time your visit with one of the following

Night Market Honolulu which is held on the 3rd Friday of each month

Eat The Street held on the 4th Friday of each month

Both of these events feature local food trucks.

You might also want to check out – Cookspace where they often hold awesome cooking classes, and DishCrawl.ย These two sites might not have events a huge distance in advance, so check back on these sites closer to your trip to see if there is anything happening you might be interested in.

Aussie Costco

Pomai from The Tasty Island asked some months ago on the Costco Awesomeness post –

My question to you Aussies is, does your Costco carry Vegemite in bulk size (like in a bucket)? Never tried Vegemite before, yet more than eager!

On my most recent trip to Costco Auburn, having forgotten to take this photograph on a couple of previous trips, I was finally able to get the answer. Yes. Yes, they do. ๐Ÿ™‚

Vegemite is an acquired taste. I personally am not a fan. Bizarre as it seems when I generally love all things salty. To be quite honest until I went to write this post I had no idea what is actually in Vegemite. The other half is a fan, so I have a jar right here. The ingredients are – Yeast Extract from yeast grown on Barley, salt, mineral salt, malt extract from barley, colour, flavours, Niacin, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Folate.

What a bizarre food. Seriously.

I would love to bring one of these buckets across to Hawaii for you, Pomai as I am a huge fan of your blog and have been for some years now, however I am thinking if you want to try it probably best to get a small jar to begin with. I do not know anyone who could eat the amount of Vegemite found in that bucket!

I will of course bring Tim Tams which are my favourite Aussie food, in a couple of different flavours. Dark chocolate is my current flavour addiction. Fingers crossed we can organise a meet up of some kind.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

In the few hours that I was in Hawaii, I did get a chance to experience a couple of restaurants in the Ala Moana Center.

Beedoo and I went to Bubba Gump’s and we actually had the same exact thing – a Lava Flow (which was pretty awesome from what I remember – especially for a very infrequent drinker like myself :)) and the Pear & Berry salad, which had a great texture with chicken and a wide variety of fruits, all topped with feta cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette.

The salad was so awesome that you didn’t need to have anything else with it. I would also venture to guess that both of us, especially coming to the end of what was a 45-hour day crossing the date line, that was more than enough to eat ๐Ÿ˜‰

One interesting thing, for me at least, was that Bubba Gump is on the 4th floor, right by the Mai Tai Bar where there was a nice crowd there in the mid afternoon for Monday Night Football, where the right team won that day. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Cheesecake Factory

Crispy Crab Wontons – Crabmeat Blended with Cream Cheese, Green Onion, Water Chestnuts and Sweet Chili Sauce Fried Crisp in Wonton Wrappers.

Let us talk for a moment aboutย The Cheesecake Factory.

We Aussies love this place. The menu is incredibly huge, there is a lot to choose from. The serves are enormous. It is great value for money.

If you are going to eat there, my advice is to stick with appetisers. Get a few different ones, share them.

Me personally I love the Crispy Crab Wontons – the Roadside Sliders are great, the Chicken Taquitos are awesome too. Goes well with a Pina Colada or a Lava Flow.

Lava Flow

Then, cheesecake! There are so many kinds of cheesecake, you will need to be very decisive. And if you cannot pick just one, grab an extra slice to take back to the hotel for later.

The Hawaii Five-0 Cocktail

In doing some research for this post, I discovered that Hilton have youtube videos on how to make some of their cocktails. You can see the video for the Hawaii Five-0 by clicking here.

I am normally a Pina Colada or Lava Flow girl, but I found this cocktail on my last trip and I am a big fan of it. The sweet and sour really makes this drink.

I found mine at Tropics Bar & Grill but you can probably get this at other Hilton bars too. If you go to Tropics during happy hour between 3-5pm this drink is only $8.50 and get some coconut shrimp to go with it, too!
