In the few hours that I was in Hawaii, I did get a chance to experience a couple of restaurants in the Ala Moana Center.
Beedoo and I went to Bubba Gump’s and we actually had the same exact thing – a Lava Flow (which was pretty awesome from what I remember – especially for a very infrequent drinker like myself :)) and the Pear & Berry salad, which had a great texture with chicken and a wide variety of fruits, all topped with feta cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette.
The salad was so awesome that you didn’t need to have anything else with it. I would also venture to guess that both of us, especially coming to the end of what was a 45-hour day crossing the date line, that was more than enough to eat 😉
One interesting thing, for me at least, was that Bubba Gump is on the 4th floor, right by the Mai Tai Bar where there was a nice crowd there in the mid afternoon for Monday Night Football, where the right team won that day. 😉

The wonderful Pomai over at The Tasty Island has posted a huge post full of photos of the great buys available at Costco.
Not only are there photos but there are prices too! 🙂
So any Aussies who were wondering what can be found at Costco – wonder no more. Just click on the link and all will be revealed.

I have added a new section in the link sidebar for Waikiki Beach Hotels.
There are a lot of hotels in Waikiki, but only 9 of them are beachfront on Waikiki Beach. Starting with the furthest from the Waikiki main strip, the beachfront hotels are –
Hilton Hawaiian Village – this includes the Grand Waikikian Suites which is a timeshare condo tower that is a part of the Hilton Hawaiian Village complex.
Hale Koa – a military only hotel – check here to see if you meet eligibility criteria.
Waikiki Shore – This is a condo tower. You can make bookings in several different ways. Via Outrigger and in that instance you get to use the pool at the next door Outrigger Reef. Via Castle Waikiki Shore. Via VRBO directly with condo owners. Via condo owners on other condo websites – you’d have to do some googling to find them. Each condo is decorated by the condo owner so the quality of the rooms can vary quite widely. If booking here and you want to make sure what you will get then VRBO or direct with the condo owner are the two better options.
Outrigger Reef On The Beach – Outrigger is very well known hotel brand in Hawaii and much loved by Aussies especially.
Halekulani – Five star Hawaiian luxury and some incredible dining options including Orchids, La Mer and House Without A Key
Sheraton Waikiki – With recently installed infinity pool
The Royal Hawaiian – Known as the Pink Palace
Outrigger Waikiki On The Beach – Contains several popular eateries including Dukes, Hula Grill and Chucks Steakhouse
Moana Surfrider – A Westin Resort & Spa.
Any of these hotels would be an excellent choice!
Crispy Crab Wontons – Crabmeat Blended with Cream Cheese, Green Onion, Water Chestnuts and Sweet Chili Sauce Fried Crisp in Wonton Wrappers.
Let us talk for a moment about The Cheesecake Factory.
We Aussies love this place. The menu is incredibly huge, there is a lot to choose from. The serves are enormous. It is great value for money.
If you are going to eat there, my advice is to stick with appetisers. Get a few different ones, share them.
Me personally I love the Crispy Crab Wontons – the Roadside Sliders are great, the Chicken Taquitos are awesome too. Goes well with a Pina Colada or a Lava Flow.
Then, cheesecake! There are so many kinds of cheesecake, you will need to be very decisive. And if you cannot pick just one, grab an extra slice to take back to the hotel for later.
Two things to make clear first –
1. I am not beedoo’s other half 😉
2. I am not an Australian (in heritage, but at heart? That’s a different question altogether!)
You’ll see me mentioned around here as Hoa’aloha, which is one of the many words for “friend” in the Hawaiian language. In the Trip Advisor forums, when I do post (which is quite rare in itself), I am known as bigaln2.
As my “Hawaiian” name may indicate, I am a friend of beedoo and her partner. In fact, she has referred to me in her posts as her American friend.
I have been in Hawaii for less than one day. In fact, I arrived at 6:45 AM, and departed at around 10:30 PM or so headed back to home from an awesome trip to Australia. The sights I saw in Honolulu included:
- The post office next to the airport
- Riding a city bus along the Nimitz Highway and through downtown
- A car with an Alaskan license plate
- Ala Moana Center
- Ala Moana state beach, which is pictured below:
For me, this trip is to experience a place I’ve never been to for a longer time than a single day. I already have my time off from work approved, and the plane tickets bought (thanks Expedia! :))
I also have the car rental sorted out, and I’m paying literally half the amount the rental agency is charging thanks to Discount Hawaii Car Rental – a site that I found out about on the forums.
Kthxbai from me for now! 🙂

Every time I think I have made progress, I find more trip reports not on the list. I don’t know if I will ever manage to list all of them..
I know I’ve had enough for the day when I find someone who has posted each day as a separate post and I just can’t face hunting down and linking to all the posts. Please, if you are writing a trip report, don’t do that! 🙂 Or if you must make a separate day for each post, when you are done, link to all the days in *each* post, so they can easily be found by people later.
